Choosing a middle school is one of the most critical decisions that parents have to make. The foundation for their children's success in high school, college and beyond is set during the middle school years. The Crown School for Law and Journalism is a middle school that offers a safe and nurturing environment for academically gifted students.
The Crown School for Law and Journalism is located at P.S. 161. Students accepted into the
school remain there through eighth grade and receive instruction in all
curricula mandated for middle schools. In addition to courses
in law and journalism, we offer advanced courses in mathematics and science.
Our science courses are taught by college professors at a nearby college.
Students will have the opportunity to take high school Regents examinations
in Living Environment (Biology).
As part of the journalism program, students write articles, publish newspapers, participate in authors' studies and learn word processing skills. In the law track, students role play Supreme Court hearings, congressional floor debates and sessions advising the President on domestic issues. There are internship programs in which students work with judges, lawyers and journalists. Students are active participants
in a program which helps them to communicate their ideas effectively, examine critical issues, make decisions and develop a general interest in learning.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in art, chorus, chess, mentoring, Prep for Prep, Prep 9, Medgar Evers STEP (science and technology entry program) and SEMAA (science, engineering, mathematics, aerospace academy) programs. We have a state of the art computer lab and an excellent library-media center where students can do research. Students attend the Mathematics and Science Institute at Stuyvesant High SChool, where they receive training in taking the Specialized High School examination.
In February 2001, a House system was established that operates in the same manner as the school in the Harry Potter books. Our focus is excellence in all subject areas, cooperative learning, community service, creativity and sports challenges. Children will receive awards and special recognition for their efforts at the end of the school year.
Our goal is to give our students the very best education and to prepare them to attend the finest high schools in the city. Each year, out students have been accepted into high schools such as Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, Murrow and Bronx High School of Science.
To apply for admission to the Crown School for Law and Journalism, students must have scored at level 3 or 4 on the fourth grade reading and mathematics tests. Students are accepted into this program based on a written examination and teacher recommendation. The Crown School for Law and Journalism is not for everyone. The work is demanding; students and their parents must be willing to contribute the time and effort necessary to achieve maximum results. Our students will leave here prepared to excel in the most selective high schools in the city.
All of our students wear uniforms and are expected to maintain their academic standing in order to remain in the program.
Applications for admission are available in the month of November.
