The P.S. 161 Library Media Center uses a multimedia approach for research and recreational library usage. The library is a feast for the eyes as well as the mind, thanks in part, to Library Power funding. The library is brightly painted and has a carpeted reading nook for pleasure reading or storytelling.
There are nearly 10,000 books, thirteen computers, twelve printers, and two scanners for children to use, enjoy, and increase their academic skills. Soon, the library conputer station will be connected to the internet. There are five general information print encyclopedias, seven specialized
subject encyclopedias, a vast majority of Macintosh software, many different varieties of research and reference material, and an extensive collection of video and audio cassettes. The library subscribes to eighteen different publications for student and staff use. Twelve of the computers
are located on two hexagon tables that have swivel chairs to make computer
usage easier.0
The library operates with the practice of flexible scheduling, enabling the librarian to better suit the needs of the teachers and students as they occur. Some teachers require class appointments, others have children come in small groups to do committee work, and all send their students to borrow books on a regular basis during open access times. In addition, there is a copy machine for the use of staff and students. The P.S. 161 Library is a vital and integral part of the pulse of the school. I look forward to the continued collaboration with my colleagues to further suit the needs of the children of P.S. 161. |
