Welcome Class News

Welcome to the home page of Class 1-309!

We are a first grade class at P.S. 161 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. This site will help you familiarize yourself with our class environment. I will try to update this site at least monthly, to provide current information.

Our school is a wonderful community of dedicated educators and parents, who strive to work together to ensure rich, successful learning experiences for the students.

We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Isa Hamilton as our Educational Assistant. Her experience and dedication contribute tremendously to our success!

Please explore the site and take my "Visitor's Survey" (coming soon.) I always enjoy reading the comments on my surveys. They help me keep the content relevant to your needs. If you have a suggestion on an area I could add to this site, let me know. I'll look into it!

Now that the New Year is upon us, let's gear up for great learning. As the colder weather settles in, we'll curl up with lots of great books. This will head us on our way to reaching our 25 book per child goal- as well as spur all of the children on to full class membership in the Principal's Reading club!

In phonics we will learn the long vowel sound-spellings.  Make sure your child reads the mini-books each night.  There should be a home library of around 36 minibooks brought home by the end of the year.

Guide your child's comprehension by asking thought provoking questions such as: What would you have done? Why do you think that happened? What could have been done differently?

In math we'll be learning addition and subtraction to 18, money and measurement. You can help at home by practicing with real coins, measuring things around the house, and using flash cards for the math facts.

As always, please encourage your child to use correct penmanship, standard English and complete sentences at all times. This will coordinate with our efforts at school.

Lastly, I want to thank all of my student's parents for their wonderful support. It is this kind of cooperation that facilitates successful learning!
