ECLAS is once again underway in P.S.161. Most of our teachers grade K-3
have started this excellent assessment tool for the lower grades. ECLAS which
stands for Early Childhood Language Arts Assessment System is an intensive
and very accurate tool for measuring a students level in literacy. The
assessment includes four strands which are, alphabet/sight word, phonemic
awareness, reading and writing mechanics. Each student is measured according
to thier mastery level from 1 through six. Six is the highest level a student
can achieve in ECLAS and will no longer need to be assessed when this level
is reached.
Each strand is carefully administered by our expert teachers. The
strands are recorded and permanently placed with the students records. Each
strand covers very detailed aspects of the skills required for mastery.
Teachers can make great use of the information learned about their students
weakness and strengths in that area.
We have been coordinating ECLAS for the last 3 terms in P.S. 161 and
have found that teachers are appreciating the results and their implications
for their classes. Teachers can work on whole class skills or individual
skills learned from the results.
Teachers get to know their students in a more meaningful and personal observation.
