Stuart Jay Silverman- '48. Hot Springs, Arkansas"Born in Brooklyn, Silverman grew up there and received his Master's Degree from Columbia University. He completed most of the work toward a Ph. D. at the University of Illinois in Urbana and taught English and Creative Writing at Auburn University, Alabama, The University of Illinois at Urbana and Chicago, and the City Colleges of Chicago. When he isn't on the road, he divides his time between homes in Hot Springs, Arkansas and Chicago.'
The Complete Lost Poems: A Selection, by Stuart Jay Silverman, was recently publishes by Hawk Publishing Group in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The collection of 60 poems, some published for the first time, ranges from mythology (Icarus, Odysseus, and Orpheus rubs elbows with Frankenstein, for example) to man as part observer, part combatant in the natural world, to how we engage with literature and art. The writings of James Joyce, Wallace Stevens, and John Ashbery, painting by Rubens, a Goya etching, a sculpture by Ipousteguy enter into and become part of his sensibility. Silverman takes us on a complex and fascinating journey of images, people, sensations, questings and questionings, an experience unlike any other, and which only poetry can provide.
" '...some of the most creative, suspenseful and intelligent poems I've read in a long time...' writes Leonard J. Cirino, editor of the Pygmy Forest Press. "Many of the poems are little gems revealed in plain talk and imagistic language, others are more involved and circuitous in their route--but they all lead to some unexpected twist and turn that I find playful at times and, at other times, unexpectedly original in the totality of their closure."
"Stuart Jay Silverman has had more than 350 poems published in over a hundred magazines and anthologies in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and France. He has also written about food and travel, reviewing restaurants for many Chicago newspapers, as well as contributing extensively to guides to Chicago, Hong Kong, and Hawaii, His travel guide to the Ozarks, The Ozarks Traveler, co-authored with his wife, Sondra Rosenberg, was publishes in 1996 by Red Crane Books. Jerry Brummer '53- Graduating class of June 1953, class 8-1. Boy do I remember 161, the neighborhood, the school, the great people I grew up with, all my classmates, and the camaraderie we all shared. I just returned from our school’s reunion (50th year for my class) at Scaletta's restaurant. I had been hesitant about attending (I did not want to hear about those who were no longer with us), but I am so glad I did. The atmosphere was electric. It was so great seeing people I had not seen in some 50 years. It’s as if we were transmitted back in time for an afternoon. We had something so special! It was a time of friendship, others cannot understand. Most of us were poor, except we did not know we were poor. The games we played were street games. No computers, stereos, or TV’s; maybe a transistor Motorola radio perhaps was the best we had, other than roller skate scooters and linoleum guns. Parents looked out for us, even if we weren't theirs. It was a time that cannot be duplicated today. I felt the love in the room from everyone there, not only our years but from other years as well. There was no jealousy, no one upsmanship; just a bunch of nostalgic people who loved growing up in our "hood". It made us all better people. At least for me I credit growing up in Crown Heights and attending P.S. 161 with making me more reliant, confident and one of the major reasons I have been successful in my dreams and in my life. I love you all. I lived across the street from 161 at 480 Montgomery St. From the 4th floor I could see the entire schoolyard and knew when to come down to play with my friends. I am a graduate of 161 in '53, graduate of Brooklyn Tech. HS in '57, then Brooklyn College in '61, Married '62, Army til '63, Government til '81. Divorced in '83. Remarried in '85 to a most wonderful gal Janet. Owned my own business since '82, and am now in the process of retiring. We live in Bayside, wife retired already, she wants to travel, and I want to fish. This should be very interesting.

Arnold lasted many years and even co-starred with Arnold Swartzenegger in the picture he played a Greek god in new York City. Arnold was the taxi driver. Anyone ever heard of herb Shriner, an early tv personality game show host. He had a show called, I think, "names the same". people with names like rip van winkle would come on and the "experts" had to guess the name. Vintage 50's TV. Shriner was a 161 alumni. Anybody from sullivan pl out there, between Nostrand and Rogers Aves? Could hear the crowd screaming for the "Dook" to hit one to Bedford Ave .I can't believe how many memories are coming back. Last one, 1955, friday night and the bums had won it. There was a great mass of fans at Ebbets that night, all around the ball park. As I was coming home from my Boy Scout Troop 111 meeting, at 161, I could hear the crowd. I couldn't resist and went down to the ball field- Thousands of fans driving and milling around. The Dodgers finally had won it. Happiness and peace to all in these troubling times, and please forgive my ramblings.

Wendy (Thier) Clothier '61 - Washington, Massachusetts. It totally amazes me to be in contact with people from my elementary school all these years later. Who would have ever imagined typing messages into a computer for alumni to read almost 40 years down the road? I have such unbelievably fond memories of my 161 years. Some of these memories are crystal clear. Even though I was never into "sports" at all, I loved playing in those afterschool "Punchball Tornaments", supervised by the younger Mr. Fox. Something tells me there were 2 teachers there with the same name... one a father and one his son, I imagine. Those days were amazing! I would love to hear from any of my classmates. Robert Mike Hicks (Reid) '67- I went to PS 161 from the 2nd grade until the 5th. I left in the 5th grade, when my parents bought a house in the suburbs. I remember my 2nd grade teacher's face but not her name. She was a hippie type who loved folk music. It was the first place I heard Irish folk songs and the poem the Highwayman. My third grade teacher was Ms. Boxer, my fourth grade teacher was Ms Chesire, my 5th grade teacher was Mr. Simon. The guidance counselor if that was her title was a Ms. Scott. I had a crush on her daughter Cheryl. It was next door to a Jewish Yeshiva. Since I used to walk to school from 1600 Bedford Ave and 220 Mntgomery st. (Ebbetts Field apts) My first day in the second grade I went to the Yeshiva instead of PS 161. I also remember how the playground was elevatd and seperated from the Yeshiva by a fence and how kids used to taunt the Jewish kids. The principal was Mr. Rosenbuth and the vice principal was Mr. Fishman. We were in the park on a class outing for open air music concert. I remember Lance Littlejohn, Tonu Suarez, Gary I can't remember his last name, Timothy I can't rememeber his last name, Clayton Blaize who had great potential as an artist, Maureen Boykins, and Others who I can see their faces but cannot recall the names. I remember playing handball and punchball and three flies up and box ball. I remember the yard line ups and the orderly entrance into the building in the morning and after lunch. I remeber wanting to be a guard. I remember crossing guards with their white three point plastic belts and silver badges. I remember fire drills, I remember a kid attacking a teacher. I remember going home down Montgomery street and running on rooftops and ringing bells and running away. I rememeber cleaning erasers in the vaccume that was in a special room. I remember wooden hall passes. I remember the penny candy from the candy store at the base of the stairs that lead from the playground to the street. Great memories and melancholy at the same time. I should drive by and see the school.
