COMPUTER LAB 508 - Web site:  www.ps161.com/508/

Welcome to Computer Lab 508!  To make your time here most productive; you should familiarize yourself with the requirements of this course.  Knowledge of the requirements will reduce the chance of a misunderstanding that will affect your grade. All of the following items can affect your passing or failing the course.

GRADES     All projects assigned during the term count toward your final grade.  Tests may be written or oral.  They may also consist of observation in class of how you perform specific tasks on the computer.  Prior absence is no excuse.  Get the telephone number of a classmate to keep up-to-date when you are absent.  You must make up class notes and homework when you are absent!

CLASSWORK         Being in class every day is not class work.  Actively participating in the lesson is class work.  Follow all the rules of the lab, including Internet safety, proper computer use, silent working conditions, and strictly using your specifically assigned computer station. Take part in class discussions and answer questions.  Raise your hand often and be ready when called upon.  Always answer in complete sentences.  Copy all notes neatly and be prepared to have them periodically evaluated for completeness.  Computers are expensive.  Mistreatment of the computers will result in you being prohibited from using them.

HOMEWORK   Assignments and projects MUST be handed in on time! They must be neat, complete and legible. Late homework assignments will be penalized. You are responsible for all assignments even if you are not in school.  Get the telephone number of a classmate to keep you up-to-date if you are out.  You should make sure that you have access to a computer after school hours, to do homework and research as needed.  (The Brooklyn Public Library has computers that a free to use!)  REMEMBER:  Homework counts!

NOTEBOOK and PEN   You are required to keep an up-to-date 8 1/2 x 11 inch loose-leaf notebook.  It must have a separate section for Computer.  Included in this section will be class notes, tests, homework, and a vocabulary list of computer terms and their definitions, which YOU will compile from your notes.  Do not leave these items home unless you are told to do so; there will be surprise notebook checks.  If you are absent, you must have the missing class notes within 3 days of your return to school.  You may NOT copy missing notes in class. That would distract you from paying attention to the lesson in progress. YOU MUST save your complete computer notebook section until you have received your final grade.

1   8 ˝  X  11” (3 hole punched) LINED NOTE PAD     You can use this pad to provide support in class when writing your notes.  Then periodically put the papers in your notebook section as described below.

1 FOLDER            Since the computer lab is small, there is not enough room to use a loose-leaf notebook. Therefore, you must have apocket folder exclusively for Computer Lab.  When the folder gets torn, you are expected to get a new one.

Clearly label the cover with your name, homeroom and Lab Work You are solely responsible for maintaining it.  When the folder gets torn, you must replace it.

1. Lab Folder

Each month, you will put all papers into your notebook section. Start fresh each month.

2.        Bring your folder, diskette and two pens to Computer Lab EVERY day.

ATTENDANCE        Attendance will be taken every day.  You must get my approval BEFORE seeing any other teacher during your Computer Lab period, even if they have sent you a pass.  Passes presented afterward will not be accepted and you will be marked cutting.  Cutting will result in a lowered grade or failure.

LATENESS              Attendance will be taken every day.  You are expected to be in your assigned seat, silent and attentive, with your folder opened, and pen in hand when class starts.  Being anywhere else in the room constitutes lateness. Chronic lateness will result in a lowered grade or failure. If you are late to the Computer Lab because you were dismissed late from a prior class, speak with that teacher.  If a teacher detained you, you are expected to have a written pass when you come to this class.

PASSES                  Do not ask for a pass until ten minutes into the period or within ten minutes of the end of the period.  The pass is for the lavatory ONLY. Any other use without the teacher's prior approval will be considered cutting.  You must neatly sign and time mark the “Out Of Room” sheet before and after you return to the Computer Lab.

REMEMBER            YOU are the one that is responsible for the grade YOU get, not your parents, teachers, or friends.  What YOU get out of the course is a direct result of what YOU put into it.

OPEN ACCESS       If you use the lab during open Access, you must follow ALL lab rules, or you will be banned from using the lab.  No exceptions.  See the Lab Rules posted in the lab. Computers are expensive.  Mistreatment of the computers will result in you being prohibited from using them.
