Grade 1 Curriculum and Resources:

Course Description 

The information technology studies in Level 5 emphasize skills in using word processing, data bases, and storage devices. Desk-top publishing documents are produced and additional problem-solving skills are introduced.

Student learning will meet the New York State Standards for Elementary Computer Technology.


  • Word Processing Skills
  1. Create and save a new document
    1. *Use save and save as
  2. Open, view, and print documents
    1. Print entire file
  3. Format documents
    1. *Selecting font style & size
  4. Use a word processor in real world context to:
    1. Write sentences, stories or poems

  • Fundamental Computer Skills
  1. Use and understand basic computer related terms:
    1. Login (log-in)
    2. Cursor
    3. Icon
    4. Scroll bar
    5. Hour glass/busy
    6. Word processor
    7. Internet
    8. *Open File
  2. Identify basic computer hardware components and peripheral devices:
    1. Keyboard & mouse
    2. Monitor
    3. Printer
    4. Headphones/Speakers
  3. Care and appropriate use of hardware
    1. Demonstrate appropriate care and use of keyboard & mouse
    2. Demonstrate ability to turn computer off/on independently
  4. Identify the functions and advantages of computer productivity software
    1. *Word processing
  5. Use basic computer management skills
    1. Demonstrate ability to access and exit software
    2. *Demonstrate ability to manage files (saving, retrieving)
  6. Keyboarding skills
    1. Students will use the keyboard to input data into the computer to create documents.
  7. Mouse skills
    1. Students will use the mouse as an input device to control programs.

  • Computer Networking and Telecommunication Skills
  1. Use the network by:
    1. Demonstrating appropriate use of log-in numbers/names
    2. *Saving files to individual home directories

  • Legal/Ethical Skills
  1. Shows understanding of appropriate legal/ethical conduct by:
    1. Demonstrating appropriate use of computers
    2. Demonstrating appropriate computer etiquette
